Prayers for Peace

Prayers for Peace

Purpose

To discuss the doctrine of prayer and write your own plan for the week. Based on President Henry B. Eyring's April 2026 talk, Prayers for Peace.

1.0

The Promise of Peace

1.1 · Quote

I am grateful to be with you at this time when we can remember again the Savior's comfort to His Apostles, as He knew that He would have to leave them alone, without Him to lead, protect, and succor them in their perils.

President Eyring, Prayers for Peace, April 2026

1.2 · Scripture

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

John 14:27, Jesus to His apostles at the Last Supper

1.3 · Application

Some of you, perhaps many, are not feeling the peace the Lord promised. You may have prayed for personal peace and spiritual comfort. Yet you may feel that the heavens are silent to your pleading for peace. There is an enemy of your soul who does not want you and those you love to find peace. He cannot enjoy it. He works to prevent you from even wanting to find the peace the Savior and our Heavenly Father desire you to have.

President Henry B. Eyring, “Finding Personal Peace,” General Conference, April 2023

1.4 · Discuss

How is the peace He offers different from the peace the world offers? Where have you confused the two?

1.5 · Reflect

What does His peace look like for you this week?

2.0

When the World Shakes

2.1 · Quote

The world today seems to be in commotion. There are wars and rumors of wars. The economies of whole continents seem to be faltering. Prophesied wickedness seems to be accelerating as the Savior's return draws nearer.

President Eyring, Prayers for Peace, April 2026

2.2 · Scripture

And all things shall be in commotion; and surely, men's hearts shall fail them; for fear shall come upon all people.

Doctrine and Covenants 88:91, given through Joseph Smith on signs of the Second Coming

2.3 · Application

In moments of fear or doubt or troubling times, hold the ground you have already won, even if that ground is limited. In the growth we all have to experience in mortality, the spiritual equivalent of this boy’s affliction or this parent’s desperation is going to come to all of us. When those moments come and issues surface, the resolution of which is not immediately forthcoming, hold fast to what you already know and stand strong until additional knowledge comes.

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, “Lord, I Believe,” General Conference, April 2013

2.4 · Discuss

What in the world right now feels like commotion to you?

2.5 · Reflect

List the commotions in your life. What has you nervous or anxious?

3.0

Burdens Made Light

3.1 · Quote

I testify that the Lord hears and answers the prayers of our hearts, just as He did for Alma and his people. We can follow His commandment to pray always by having a continual prayer in our hearts.

President Eyring, Prayers for Peace, April 2026

3.2 · Scripture

I will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs, even while you are in bondage. The burdens which were laid upon Alma and his brethren were made light; yea, the Lord did strengthen them that they could bear up their burdens with ease, and they did submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord.

Mosiah 24:14–15, the Lord lightening the burdens of Alma's people

3.3 · Application

As you and I face challenges and tests in our lives, the gift of faith and an appropriate sense of personal confidence that reaches beyond our own capacity are two examples of the tender mercies of the Lord. Repentance and forgiveness of sins and peace of conscience are examples of the tender mercies of the Lord. And the persistence and the fortitude that enable us to press forward with cheerfulness through physical limitations and spiritual difficulties are examples of the tender mercies of the Lord.

Elder David A. Bednar, “The Tender Mercies of the Lord,” General Conference, April 2005

3.4 · Discuss

When has the Lord answered prayer by changing you instead of changing the situation?

3.5 · Reflect

Name the burden you are carrying. Then record what it would mean for that burden to be made light without being removed.

4.0

Ask, Seek, Knock

4.1 · Quote

In moments of pain, loneliness, or confusion, we know that our Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son are aware of our circumstances and that They yearn to bless us.

President Eyring, Prayers for Peace, April 2026

4.2 · Scripture

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Matthew 7:7–8, from the Sermon on the Mount

4.3 · Application

I remember very vividly the day after day that I walked over to the temple and ascended up to the fourth floor where we have our solemn assemblies, where we have our meetings of the Twelve and the Presidency. And after everybody had gone out of the temple, I knelt and prayed. And I prayed with such a fervency, I tell you! I knew that something was before us that was extremely important to many of the children of God. And I knew that we could receive the revelations of the Lord only by being worthy and ready for them and ready to accept them and to put them into place. Day after day I went and with great solemnity and seriousness, alone in the upper rooms of the Temple, and there I offered my soul and offered our efforts to go forward with the program… we said, “Lord, we want only what is right… we want it when you want it and not until.”

President Spencer W. Kimball, recounted in Edward L. Kimball, Lengthen Your Stride: The Presidency of Spencer W. Kimball (2005), ch. 22 — on his prayers leading up to the 1978 revelation on the priesthood

4.4 · Discuss

Why does the Lord require us to ask, seek, and knock, rather than simply revealing it to us upfront?

4.5 · Reflect

What will you have the courage and humility to ask, seek, and knock for this week?

5.0

Pour Out Your Soul

5.1 · Quote

Opening the windows of heaven through fervent prayer does not require the use of many words or flowery language. Rather, the diligence in prayer which Heavenly Father requires of us is to pour out our souls in private places and have our hearts drawn out in prayer unto him continually.

President Eyring, Prayers for Peace, April 2026

5.2 · Scripture

And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord.

1 Samuel 1:15, Hannah praying for a son at Shiloh

5.3 · Application

Finally, in desperation, he spoke to me with considerable emotion: “Dr. Nelson, I have prayed for help and have been directed to you. The Lord will not reveal to me how to repair that second valve, but He can reveal it to you. Your mind is so prepared. If you will operate upon me, the Lord will make it known to you what to do. Please perform the operation that I need, and pray for the help that you need.” His great faith had a profound effect upon me. How could I turn him away again? Following a fervent prayer together, I agreed to try.

President Russell M. Nelson, “Sweet Power of Prayer,” General Conference, April 2003

5.4 · Discuss

What gets in the way of being honest with God?

5.5 · Reflect

Write the prayer you would say if no one was listening but Him.

6.0

Prayers of the Heart

6.1 · Quote

You may not feel like praying or you may not know what to say, but God hears the secret prayers of your heart. The feelings of your heart and the love for our Heavenly Father and for His Beloved Son can be so constant that your prayers will ascend always.

President Eyring, Prayers for Peace, April 2026

6.2 · Scripture

And Alma and his people did not raise their voices to the Lord their God, but did pour out their hearts to him; and he did know the thoughts of their hearts.

Mosiah 24:12, Alma's people in bondage to the Lamanites

6.3 · Application

Tears filled my eyes as I stood with you to sing that stirring hymn of the Restoration. Near the conclusion of the singing, to my mind came this verse from the Book of Mormon: “But behold, I, Nephi, will show unto you that the tender mercies of the Lord are over all those whom he hath chosen, because of their faith, to make them mighty even unto the power of deliverance.” My mind was drawn immediately to Nephi’s phrase “the tender mercies of the Lord,” and I knew in that very moment I was experiencing just such a tender mercy. A loving Savior was sending me a most personal and timely message of comfort and reassurance through a hymn selected weeks previously.

Elder David A. Bednar, “The Tender Mercies of the Lord,” General Conference, April 2005

6.4 · Discuss

When have you prayed without words and felt heard? What does that tell you about how God listens?

6.5 · Reflect

Write a few things you'll be praying for in your heart this week.

7.0

Pray Always

7.1 · Quote

It is significant that their spiritual strength came from continued prayer rather than waiting to pray until a moment of crisis when they desperately needed divine help. Consistent prayer during joyous times and also during seasons of distress and grief will surely be rewarded according to His will and perfect timing.

President Eyring, Prayers for Peace, April 2026

7.2 · Scripture

They had given themselves to much prayer, and fasting; therefore they had the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation, and when they taught, they taught with power and authority of God.

Alma 17:3, the sons of Mosiah preparing to preach to the Lamanites

7.3 · Application

I have had many warnings in my life… I will refer to one circumstance which took place in 1848. I had been to Boston, and on my return I stopped at the house of one of the brethren in Cambridgeport. I drove my carriage into his yard, unhitched my horses, and tied them to the carriage. I then went to bed at the usual time, half past nine. The voice of the Spirit said to me, “Get up, and move your carriage.” I told my wife the Spirit had told me to get up and move my carriage. I went out and moved my carriage some distance, and tied my horses to an oak tree. I then went to bed again. I had hardly got into bed before the same Spirit said, “Get up, and move your horses from that oak tree.” I got up and moved my horses, and tied them to a small locust tree. I then went to bed and slept. In about thirty minutes a whirlwind caught the oak tree to which my horses had first been tied, and broke it off near the ground… Had I not listened to the revelations of the Spirit of God, I should have been killed.

President Wilford Woodruff, Leaves from My Journal (autobiography, 1881), recounting an evening in 1848

7.4 · Discuss

What does it feel like to keep an open line with God in the middle of an ordinary day, instead of only at scheduled prayer times?

7.5 · Reflect

What are you going to do this week to better fulfill the call to pray always?

8.0

Flooded Heaven

8.1 · Quote

Faithful Latter-day Saints in hardship across the world have flooded heaven with prayers. In times of fear, tragedy, danger, trouble, or illness, people often turn to God in prayer. His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray, lives, knows us, watches over us, and cares for us.

President Eyring, Prayers for Peace, April 2026

8.2 · Scripture

The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

Psalm 9:9–10, David praising God as a refuge in trouble

8.3 · Application

Imagine the scene. A father has carried his suffering son from town to town, from healer to healer, and finally to the disciples — who could not help. At last he kneels in front of Jesus and begs Him to do something — anything. Brother Holland, picturing that moment, says: “This man is saying, in effect, ‘Our whole family is pleading. Our struggle never ceases. We are exhausted. Our son falls into the water. He falls into the fire. He is continually in danger, and we are continually afraid. We don’t know where else to turn. Can you help us? We will be grateful for anything — a partial blessing, a glimmer of hope, some small lifting of the burden carried by this boy’s mother every day of her life.’” Then Jesus heals the boy — because a family flooded heaven on his behalf.

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, “Lord, I Believe,” General Conference, April 2013 — recasting the plea of the father in Mark 9, who brought his afflicted son to the Savior and cried, “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.”

8.4 · Discuss

What are things we — as a quorum, a ward, a family, a community — could be adding to our prayers? Who and what should we be flooding heaven for together?

8.5 · Reflect

What are you flooding heaven for this week?

9.0

Recognizing the Answer

9.1 · Quote

Most of the time our prayers will be answered in a still, small voice from the Spirit. The answer may come as we read the scriptures or hear the words of a prophet. It may come during a quiet walk or in the middle of the night. The Lord has His own timing. He answers in a way that builds our faith and our willingness to act.

President Henry B. Eyring, Prayer, October 2001 General Conference

9.2 · Scripture

I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart. Now, behold, this is the spirit of revelation; behold, this is the spirit by which Moses brought the children of Israel through the Red Sea on dry ground.

Doctrine and Covenants 8:2–3, Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery learning how revelation comes

9.3 · Application

One night the priesthood leader had a dream about one of the young men whom he knew only from a picture. In the dream he saw the young man dressed in a white shirt and wearing a missionary name tag. With a companion seated at his side, the young man was teaching a family. The young man held the Book of Mormon in his hand, and he looked as if he were testifying of the truthfulness of the book. The priesthood leader then awoke from his dream. At an ensuing priesthood gathering, the leader approached the young man he had seen in his dream and asked to talk with him for a few minutes. The priesthood leader recounted the dream and asked the young man about its meaning. Choking with emotion, the young man simply replied, “It means God knows who I am.”

Elder David A. Bednar, “The Tender Mercies of the Lord,” General Conference, April 2005

9.4 · Application

In preparing for that fateful day, I prayed over and over again, but still did not know what to do for his leaking tricuspid valve. Even as the operation commenced, my assistant asked, “What are you going to do for that?” I said, “I do not know.” We began the operation. After relieving the obstruction of the first valve, we exposed the second valve. We found it to be intact but so badly dilated that it could no longer function as it should. While examining this valve, a message was distinctly impressed upon my mind: Reduce the circumference of the ring. Then a picture came vividly to my mind, showing how stitches could be placed—to make a pleat here and a tuck there—to accomplish the desired objective. I still remember that mental image—complete with dotted lines where sutures should be placed.

President Russell M. Nelson, “Sweet Power of Prayer,” General Conference, April 2003 — recounting an answer that came mid-surgery

9.5 · Discuss

List the ways you have received answers to your prayers. What were the circumstances, and how were you able to recognize the answer?

9.6 · Reflect

List the answers to prayer you can remember. For each one, note the circumstance, the form the answer took, and any common themes you notice across them.

10.0

Compass vs Map

10.1 · Quote

I asked my son to pray about which road to take, and he felt strongly that we should go to the right, and I did as well. We went to the right and it was a dead end. Matt said, Dad, why did we feel, after praying about it, that the right road was the proper one to take, and it wasn't? I said, I think the Lord's answer to our prayer was to get us on the right road as quickly as possible, with some reassurance that we were on the right road and we didn't have to worry about it. The easiest way to do that was to let us go five hundred yards down the wrong road, and very quickly know, without a doubt, it was the wrong road, and therefore with equal certainty know the other one was the right road.

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, Wrong Roads, Mormon Channel

10.2 · Scripture

The pointers which were in the ball did work according to the faith and diligence and heed which we did give unto them. And there was also written upon them a new writing, which was plain to be read, which did give us understanding concerning the ways of the Lord; and it was written and changed from time to time, according to the faith and diligence which we gave unto it. And thus we see that by small means the Lord can bring about great things.

1 Nephi 16:28–29, Lehi's family in the wilderness with the Liahona

10.3 · Discuss

When have you prayed, felt good about a road, started down it, and run into a dead end? Looking back, was it really an unanswered prayer, or was the dead end the answer?

10.4 · Reflect

List times you felt good about a road, started down it, and ran into a dead end. What did you learn? What themes can you carry with you?
